Seed Collection

Kowhai seeds Photo by Phil Bendle

This should be a page that contains general material on seed collection.

Here are some of my ideas on topics to cover on this page. What is missing?

  • Ecosourcing
  • Ecological Districts
  • Permission to collect seeds
  • General guidelines for the seed collection process
  • Storing seeds
  • Record-keeping, and identifying batches of seeds
  • Discussion on how long seeds will keep.

External Links

We could add some links here – they should be to general matters of seed collection. Species-specific links should go on the species-specific pages.

Material for the species-specific pages

This page should contain general matters. For each species the details will vary, so on the species-specific pages it would be good if these questions could be addressed:

  • What months can seeds be collected?
  • What should you look out for before picking the seeds – e.g. colour?
  • If it is not practical to collect fully ripe seeds, can they be collected at other times? example: can you pick nikau seeds when they are still green, or can you collect them from under the tree after the flesh has rotted?
  • How should/can seeds be stored or treated before planting? e.g. do they need to be planted immediately? How long can they be stored? Should they be placed in the fridge? Do they need scraping e.g. sandpapering of kowhai.
  • What tips on species that release their seeds far off the ground e.g. kauri and rewarewa, or where the seeds seems to be released explosively e.g. hangehange
  • What processes for releasing seeds that are contained within fruit – e.g. coprosmas, putaputaweta, mahoe?
  • Photos! of the fruit on the trees, the seeds themselves, and any seed preparation stages.

Comments, please….

The idea is to allow people to contribute through a comments section on most pages. Comments and suggestions below please…
